Cyril Dunděra: Design je o autentičnosti a klidu. Stejně jako kvalitní základ šatníku.

Cyril Dunděra: Design is about authenticity and peace. Just like a quality wardrobe foundation.

At ELKA LOUNGE, we believe that true quality doesn't need to shout to be heard. We find a similar philosophy, where peace, thoughtfulness, and respect for the material play a primary role, in the work of designer Cyril Dunděra. In his creations, which include award-winning furniture, interior installations, and collaborations with prestigious brands, Cyril pursues a signature that is clean, yet with a distinct sensibility and deep respect for craftsmanship.

While we build a solid wardrobe foundation from sustainable and natural materials, Cyril focuses on the solid foundations of the interior. During our conversation, we delved into how minimalism in design meets durability and why a balance between external style and inner peace is essential for a high-quality life.

Between form and function

Who are you and how would you describe your journey to what you do today?

Cyril Dunděra, designer and part-time DJ. The journey was long and thorny. It started at the SUPŠ secondary art school with furniture design. It continued with long studies at UMPRUM (Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague), also design. Then the JanskyDundera studio. Now, however, I am a "freelancer," as my colleague and I from the studio have each gone our own separate way :)

What does success mean to you? Is it the moment when something you have created truly lives and functions in a space, or is it more an inner feeling that you have managed to translate a thought into a form exactly as you intended?

Success for me is a feeling of peace and comfort. So yes, a kind of inner certainty. It doesn't necessarily have to be something that is successfully transformed into reality. But rather the feeling that it truly stands there.

What moments do you consider turning points in your career or life?

The first is definitely UMPRUM. Another happened recently when my colleague and I in the studio broke up (but in a good way!) haha.

How would you describe your personal style – in design, in life, and in clothing?

Random luck.

What does clothing mean to you – is it a functional object, a means of self-expression, or another layer of design that completes your personality? Do you perceive fashion as part of visual culture, or as an intimate dialogue with yourself?

Sometimes it is an expression of mood. Sometimes a feeling of safety. Other times just a functional piece of "rag."

What elements or colors best describe you? Are they more natural textures, raw materials, and muted tones, or do you like a moment of surprise in details and contrasts?

That depends terribly on the current mood, disposition, or given project. Right now, I love green :)

What environment inspires you in your work and creation? Do you find inspiration more in architecture, the silence of the workshop, or in movement and urban chaos?

The silence of home. I would love to be in the workshop, but usually, it's messy, both noisy and dusty everywhere. But if I had a workshop, I would be there non-stop. Sometimes, though, walks around Prague, just with headphones and music! Other times, into the forest.

What dream is still waiting to be realized?

To leave the Czech Republic for some time, rather longer than shorter.

What three words best describe you?

Comfort / progressive / authentic

Design That Lasts

The interview with Cyril Dunděra confirmed one important thing for us: in today's overcrowded world, the key is to focus on quality that brings long-term value and inner peace. Whether you choose a wool coat that will last you dozens of winters or a timeless piece of furniture that will become a stable part of your home, the principle is the same: less, but better.

Design work that does not chase seasonal trends but is based on authenticity and respect for craftsmanship is a valuable inspiration for how to approach your own wardrobe and interior. Treat yourself to thoughtful pieces that surround you and support your well-being. Have the courage to choose those that have soul and will stand the test of time.
